Klein Forest Automotive Teacher Earns Top Certification

Jonathan Couch receives World Class Technician certification
To obtain the World Class Technician certification, applicants must earn 22 specific ASE certifications. Currently, Couch holds 39 areas of ASE certification. In total, ASE offers 53 areas of certification, and his goal is to obtain them all by the end of the year. With more than 900,000 professionals in the industry, only 1,969 hold the title of World Class Technician. Also, Couch is one of only 400 professionals to have both Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association (AERA) certifications.
Couch is proud to hold these honors but is more excited about the impact it has on his students. He has pursued a path as a forever learner by obtaining these certifications, but also as a leader who helps his students pursue success.
“My challenge to my students is to be someday better than I am,” he said. “The only way I can get them there is giving them everything I can from the start. Having mastered so many different trades makes me a valuable resource for my students to use to grow and gain skills that others would be incapable of teaching them.”
Just this year at Skills USA District 8 contest one of Couch’s students took first-place in Mastery level Automotive Service Technology, and another student earned second-place in Motorcycle Service Technology. The curriculum is not designated for motorcycles, but many of the concepts are the same says Couch. So when a student has interest in say motorcycles, collision repair, welding, diesel, lawn mowers, tractors, customer service, collision estimating, automotive technology or even something as advanced as engine machining he is happy to differentiate his instruction to suit their interests.
“I seek out new things to learn all the time and the way I ensure that I have learned it is through testing and certification in those new topics. I don’t want to train good tradesmen I want to train the future’s best tradesmen.”
