Not Just Paste and Little Scissors

Not Just Paste and Little Scissors

In August, Klein ISD secondary theatre teachers had the opportunity to participate in content focused, back to school professional learning. Dr. Gino Chelakis, retired theatre educator and currently with Techland Houston, presented an active learning Thermoplastics workshop. Thermoplastic is a heat activated composite material that can be molded or formed. A hot air gun or hand held hair dryer will activate the material which, once shaped, cools strong yet lightweight and is easy to cut and paint, making it ideal for use in costuming and props.

Creative, expert based discussions exemplifying the Klein ISD high quality teaching guiding document emphasis of relationship driven, result focused, intentionally personalized, student owned learning, led to the idea of Kleb tech theatre students partnering with Klein Drama to design and build several costume pieces using Thermoplastics for the upcoming KHS production of Antigone.

Tech theatre students at Kleb learned about the science behind the Thermoplastic product, how to work with it–measuring, cutting, heating, painting. Upon completion of the costume pieces, Jennifer Richardson, Kleb Intermediate Tech Theatre teacher, stated, “I’m super proud at how everything turned out, and I’m excited to see the actors wear our pieces on stage.” The king and queen’s crowns, signet, arm cuffs and ancient Greek armor were delivered to Klein Drama this week. Jason Bradshaw, Klein Drama teacher’s comments were, “I just saw them in person. OMG! So awesome! One behalf of my cast and crew, thank you so much!!!”

These products of Kleb tech theatre students’ personalized learning can been seen in Klein Drama’s production of Antigone. Performances are at 7:00pm, September 27th, 28th, 29th and October 1st. Tickets are available at
