The federal government is scheduling its first-ever test of a nationwide system to send emergency alerts to cell phones on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. The wireless alert will go out to cell phones at 1:18 pm, followed by alerts to the broadcast emergency alert system at 1:20 pm.
The “Presidential Alert” system will use the same loud tone and vibration as other emergency alerts, such as AMBER alerts, and will read “Presidential Alert: This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” Unlike AMBER alerts, cell phone users cannot opt out of nationwide Presidential messages.
Classes may be disrupted during this Presidential Alert test that will affect cell phones nationwide. If phones are turned off during this test, the alert will sound when phones are powered on. Although we don’t anticipate the test lasting longer than a few minutes, we are uncertain of the exact length of time.
