Who We Are & Why We Exist
This past July, members of The Holdsworth Center Campus Leadership Program were presented with the vision and mission of HEB. While they are a large, complex company with many policies and procedures, they could clearly state who they are and why they exist. They shared with us The HEB Way: A Head for Business, A Passion for Results, and A Heart for People. The HEB Way is an one-page graphic that encompass their vision and culture.
Seeing HEB’s vision laid out so clearly on a page had our team asking ourselves, “Who are we, and why do we exist?” We had bits and pieces of who we are in several places. Our Campus Improvement Plan (CIP) clearly laid out goals and strategies. Our Core Values define our beliefs. We also had Mission and Vision statements. However, we struggled to clearly and simply state who we are, and why we exist. So, we worked to come up with a plan to define The Koala Way.
We started with our Vision – Learning, Serving, Leading. Could all of our pieces fit nicely into a 3-word statement? We had our staff try to do just that. They took each of our CIP goals and our Core Values and put each statement under one of our vision words. We found out that all of our pieces did fit together, we just had never been intentional in putting it all into a simple statement. We decided to take things a step further and create our own one-page graphic.
We are The Koalas and we are learning, serving, and leading.
