Listen to Yourself
I recently celebrated another birthday, and just like Ebeneezer’s ghosts haunted him, my words came back at me. It wasn’t until I heard someone quote me to myself that I realized what power my words really have and what my words tell the world about me and my motives.
I was out for a day and I returned to open my office door and found my office ablaze with pink (my favorite color) streamers and balloons, as well as, a sign lovingly made by my office assistants wishing me a happy birthday and signed with love and appreciation. On the balloons, students and my co-workers had written personal wishes and thanks. One balloon held my attention and made me think. It read “You had your day off, now get back to work!” It was signed with a heart and the person’s name.
It stuck in my head for days until I finally realized the lesson I was meant to take away from the words that I often say in jest to my staff and students as we return to work/class from meetings, conferences, lunches, or a brief conversation in the hall. People listen to me and take what I say seriously. I need to choose my words carefully and thoughtfully to ensure they have the positive, cooperative, and caring effect I want them to have. I want everyone to walk away from a conversation with me feeling empowered, positive, and supported.
Leading a life of service is very important to me. I chose teaching as a career because I knew it would allow me to serve and make a difference in the world or at least my corner of the world. I have found the most fulfillment when I am serving and supporting others. But, it wasn’t until I heard my own words come back at me from someone else that I realized how powerful those words really are. So, as we all head out to classes and offices, remember that your words hold power and influence, so choose them carefully to make our corner of the world better.
