Dorothy Lavinia Brown: Surgical Pioneer

Dorothy Lavinia Brown was born in the year of 1919. She was the first African American woman in the South to become a surgeon in 1948. She attended Meharry Medical College in the state of Tennessee. She spent her childhood in an orphanage, later on also becoming the first single woman in the state of Tennessee to get access to adopt a child in 1956. In the year 1966, she became the first African American woman to serve in the Tennessee State legislature. In the year 2004, she came to a final rest.
