Spotlight on 1st Grade and 2nd Grade TEKS Black History Leaders

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills recognizes the following historical figures in 1st Grade and 2nd Grade.  February is Black History and this month is a great time to honor these individuals by incorporating biography activities and readings into your daily lessons. Below is a brief summary of their contribution to history and you can click the links for full biographies of these individuals:

1st Grade – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights leader who fought for equality.

1st Grade – Morgan Garrett

Morgan Garrett saved lives by inventing an early version of the gas mask and a new form of traffic signal.

2nd Grade – George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver’s work on crop rotation and innovative products helped many farmers to survive and make a good living.

2nd Grade Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall was the first African American to serve on the United States Supreme Court.

2nd Grade Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth was a former slave who became an abolitionist and author.
