Klein ISD Improves in Every Accountability Domain in TEA’s A-F Rating System

Klein ISD has improved in every area of the Texas Accountability System from 2018 to 2019. In addition, more campuses than ever received Distinction Designations, which represent academic achievement in the top 25 percent of similar campuses across the state.

“As a district, we are pleased that our students continue to grow in their learning every year,” Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown said. “We are grateful to our educators for their commitment to our students’ success and our families for their partnership in our success.”

McGown attributed the improvement to a focus on educating the whole-student and on a systemwide focus on a shared vision.

“Our Shared Vision keeps us focused on continuous improvement, and we will continue to strive until EVERY student, at every grade level, in every subject is learning and achieving at his or her absolute best,” she said. “Our goal is always to honor the whole student and ensure that students pursue their unique passions with excellence.”

The Texas Accountability System evaluates the academic performance of Texas public schools as measured through standardized assessments such as STAAR and is just one measure of how students are learning and succeeding in Klein ISD. In the past year alone, Klein ISD was honored internationally, nationally and on the state level for its exceptional instructional programs and student achievements, both in and out of the classroom.

“Our Board of Trustees has adopted indicators and measures of success that encompass the growth of the whole student every year,” McGown said. “In Klein, we are committed to every student not only achieving academic success but also excellence in his or her character and life purpose, whether that be in leadership, athletics, the arts, or service.”

*Klein ISD earned an Overall Score of 91 and a 94 in Closing Gaps. However, a district may not receive an overall or domain rating of “A” if the district includes any campus with a corresponding overall or domain rating of D or F. In this case, the highest scaled score a district can receive for the overall or in the corresponding domain is a “B” rating. Per the TEA Accountability Manual, this rule applies to the Klein ISD rating in 2018-2019.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If we earned an overall rating of 91, why are we a “B” district?

Just like Klein ISD, the State of Texas is about every student. If ANY campus receives a “D” in ANY calculated domain, the district is ineligible for an “A” rating regardless of the overall score.

What does the student achievement domain mean?

The Student Achievement domain is an average of the percentage of students that performed at Approaches, Meets, and Masters in all STAAR-tested subjects. High schools are also evaluated on graduation rates and college and career readiness measures.

What does student progress mean?

The Student Progress domain represents the number of students that grew at least one year academically, as measured by STAAR results in Reading and Math.

What does Closing the Gaps measure?

Closing the Gaps Measures how students (grouped on various state-determined factors such as race, special programs, and socioeconomic status) perform compared to the student group as a whole.
