Creating a Voting Culture

370

Everything is bigger and better in Texas, right?

Wrong. At least not when it comes to voter turnout. In 2018, Texas ranked 41 among the 50 states in voter turnout, with only 46 percent of the voting-eligible showing up to the polls on Election Day. In Klein ISD, we want to transform this statistic and create a culture of voting.

Perhaps the most popular misconception and reason for opting out of this civic engagement is the age-old thought that “my vote doesn’t matter.” Wrong again. Elections are determined by who shows up to voice their hearts, minds, and priorities through their vote. Since public education is so closely linked to public policy, this means that we pick the people who determine:

  • Public school funding
  • Standardized testing rules and regulations
  • Whether to use the A-F rating system and how those grades are determined
  • How much should fund teacher pay, healthcare, and retirement

These are all topics that either affect us now, or will in the future. Your vote is not only your voice, but the voice of those who are too young to use theirs. Model a healthy culture of voting for them today, so they will continue it tomorrow and for years to come.

Registration is still open for the November 5 election. Visit VoteTexas.gov for more information and to begin the registration process. The last day to register is October 7, 2019.
