Lemm Elementary Reconstruction Receives Star of Distinction

Lemm Elementary received a Star of Distinction from TASA/TASB in the 2019-20 Exhibit of School Architecture competition.

This competition showcases new and renovated Texas schools and celebrates excellence in planning and design of the learning environment.

“After the devastating damage that Hurricane Harvey caused, we are so grateful that the reconstruction of Lemm Elementary resulted in a beautiful learning space for our students and educators,” Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown said.

During the reconstruction process, the elementary campus was torn down to the walls and foundation and then rebuilt from the inside out. This allowed the architects to keep the “bones” of the building while planning and designing a bigger and better space.

“This award proves that this model of construction is both viable and good use of funds,” associate superintendent of facilities and school services Robert Robertson said. “We were able to create a best-in-class learning facility in record time while also preserving a community landmark.”

Lemm was awarded the Value Star of Distinction for PBK Architecture’s renovations consisting of the introduction of Next Generation planning, updates of accessibility standards, replacement of existing HVAC/electrical infrastructure, incorporation of stormwater mitigation strategies, and the addition of surface detention capacity. Each of these contributed to creating a low maintenance, energy-efficient, high resiliency campus.

Perhaps the most impactful change was the 12 percent increase in classroom count, which eliminated the use of portables and allowed for all 49 classrooms to be under one roof in multiple flexible learning spaces.
