Klein ISD Recognized for Arts Promotion and Leadership
Klein ISD was named one of only 20 districts in the state to be named a District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA).
Of the over 1,000 districts across the state, only the top-notch districts were recognized with this inaugural Texas Art Education Association Visual Arts Award. This recognizes Klein’s outstanding leadership in promoting the arts in the district and community.
“When the District of Distinction Award was first announced from TAEA, I realized pretty quickly that we already do a lot of those things anyway,” Klein ISD Assistant Director of Fine Arts Melinda Jahn said. “We have a very strong fine arts and visual arts program, so it was really just a matter of being a little more mindful and deliberate in tracking some of the things we were already doing.”
This award gives teachers, students, and administrators yet another reason to be proud of the arts programs they are a part of as it signifies that Klein is paving the way for visual arts education and implementation.
“I think it’s amazing to be part of one of the top 20 districts in the state,” Klein Collins sophomore Valeria Luna said. “This makes me confident in knowing this district is a great place to learn and improve our art skills, as well as grow our experience in art.”
Klein ISD art educators pride themselves on helping students learn to express themselves, meet a deadline, and produce quality work. Klein Collins art teacher Leah McWhorter believes this award will have a lasting impact that extends beyond the art classrooms in Klein ISD.
“The hardest part of teaching visual arts is overcoming the misconceptions about what art teachers do,” she said. “I believe that receiving the District of Distinction Award will help inform, educate, and advocate for the arts and Klein’s education for every student.”
We knew that Klein ISD had a stellar fine arts and visual arts program, and this award is truly a testament to the skill, passion, perseverance, and vision for a well-rounded education for every student in Klein ISD.
“I hope this brings recognition to our district and the importance of the arts in education for the well-rounded student,” Jahn said. “Speaking to the humanity that the arts bring to our students and what kind of kids we want our kids to be as they grow up and become global citizens.”
