6 Heroes Honored for Saving Life of Faculty Member

Good health is essential to growth and achievement, which is exactly why our Klein ISD campus clinics are staffed with Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LVN) that are equipped to deal with any and all health concerns and conditions. But they can also serve as a real-life hero.

Normal day-to-day operations were underway at Klein Oak High School on September 24 when a staff member suddenly collapsed and began having a seizure. The situation quickly became critical when she stopped breathing and had no pulse, but, thanks to the bravery and expertise of six miraculous members of our Klein Family, that staff member’s life was saved.

After the initial call for help by Ashley Guillen, the clinic staff consisting of Ronnie Howard, RN; Stacey Miles, RN; and Norvella Brisco, LVN immediately activated the emergency response protocol, called 911, and applied the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The defibrillator detected that the staff member’s heart was not functioning and deployed a shock. She remained unresponsive, without a pulse.

The clinic team began performing high-quality CPR and rescue breaths while clinic assistant Kim Seippel coordinated with EMS to ensure that accurate information was communicated about the situation. Meanwhile, Brian Croft, a Klein Oak panther parent and local firefighter was bringing his daughter lunch. When he overheard that there was a medical emergency, he quickly joined the life-saving efforts by participating in the CPR compression rotation.

This team applied life-saving CPR and rescue breaths for 12 minutes until paramedics arrived to relieve them.

“Because of the quick response and care provided by this team, our staff member’s life was saved,” Health Services Coordinator Yvonne Clarke said.

We were honored to celebrate the expedient response and care coordination that ultimately and undoubtedly saved a beloved employee’s life.
