Cooking Connections!

Kaiser Elementary gladly collaborated with Harris County Public Health to provide the community with a series of four nutrition workshops. The workshops are a part of Klein ISD Parent University Master sessions where we encourage parents to engage and build connections with the school. In Kaiser, everything we do centers on our shared Klein ISD vision that EVERY student enters with a Promise and exits with a Purpose. Through this nutrition workshop, we engaged, educated, and equipped families with practical information to apply at home.

On October 25, we began our very first nutrition workshop led by three fantastic nutritionists, Mayra Aquino, Esther Gabay, and Alexandra Austine. Before the lesson started, parents’ weight and height were measured in order to follow their own journey towards healthy eating. The class then began with the introduction of the participants’ guide (Cooking Matters) and parents expressing their own personal challenges when wanting to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

This first lesson also highlighted the importance of setting a healthy example and how modeling healthy eating habits for our children is the first step in leading a healthy life. Eating well-rounded portioned meals, turning off electronics, and eating as a family are just a few examples of the strategies that parents learned. Parents learned of new foods that every family could incorporate into their meals while the nutritionist showed them how to prepare a healthy and affordable salad.

By the end of the session, parents were determined to make changes in their lifestyle with their newfound knowledge. One of our mothers, Luz Maria Hernandez, was excited to continue the workshop. “I loved it because I learned healthy eating tips, tried different foods and new ingredients that I did not know about. Most importantly, I learned how to prepare healthy recipes.”

Kaiser will continue engaging, connecting, and empowering EVERY family from Promise2Purpose through interactive and hands-on activities for families!
