Klein Forest HS and the Houston Food Bank host a food pantry every week that serves all families in the community. Each Thursday, more than 100 families have the opportunity to visit the pantry and fulfill their needs.
Starting in September of this school year, Klein Forest HS Pantry is receiving valuable help from volunteers around the Klein ISD area. This is possible, thanks to a partnership with JustServe.org, “a website where the volunteer needs of organizations may be posted and volunteers may search for places to serve in the community.” Klein ISD has developed a partnership with this organization, and the district is receiving valuable help for multiple projects. In particular, the Klein Forest Food Pantry has provided training to five volunteers to give assistance every Thursday on activities such as: Receiving groceries, sorting fresh produce, stocking shelves, registering new families, providing orientation to the first-time customers, and more!
Schools exist in communities, and we must recognize the value that the community can add to projects like the Klein Forest Food Pantry. Having committed volunteers to help every week makes a big difference when serving families, expanding networking opportunities, and improving the quality of the services. Added volunteers mean opportunities for more personalized service to families, less time in line for customers, and more time for the school staff to plan activities to enhance the families’ experience when visiting the Food Pantry.
