Klein ISD and Community Partner for Vision Screening

Klein ISD Health Services partnered with various community organizations to host a free community vision screening event this fall.
Vision can have a profound impact on a child’s learning and life. That’s why in Klein ISD, students in PreK, kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and seventh grades receive vision screening. If students do not pass the screening, they receive a referral for further evaluation.
“Sometimes there are barriers which prevent families from completing the vision referral, which means the student does not receive professional eye care,” Klein ISD Health Services Coordinator Yvonne Clarke said. “By hosting an event where parents can receive free optometry services and glasses in a centralized location, we are able to reduce many of those barriers.”
In six hours, nearly 50 Klein ISD students received professional vision services from Spring Klein Vision Center owner and Klein Forest graduate Dr. David Way. Dr. Way has a partnership with the University of Houston School of Optometry that allowed optometry students to gain experience and clinical hours while assisting Dr. Way to ensure he maximized his time and services.
“Dr. Way has a long history of giving back to his school community through donating his optometry services and glasses,” Clarke said.
Bridging for Tomorrow provided their outstanding facility free of charge to ensure that there was ample space for parents waiting, optometry lanes, an eyeglass selection, and a break room. The state-of-the-art equipment needed for vision exams was rented from Essilor, and Klein ISD Health Services funded the rental through a grant from the Tomball Regional Health Foundation. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to our very own dedicated nurses from Greenwood Forest Elementary and Kaiser Elementary volunteered their time to assist.
Glasses will be delivered to students in January!
We are so grateful for everyone in the Klein Family and community that came together for the good and benefit of our students.
