STEAM Express Celebrates 5 Years of Innovation and Exploration

The Klein ISD Education Foundation was proud to celebrate five successful years of the STEAM Express, Klein ISD’s trailer-turned-mobile classroom concept, by hosting a 5-year celebration event.
The STEAM Express provides hands-on learning opportunities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math so students can explore essential curriculum as well as potential career pathways in an engaging and interactive environment. It was originally donated to Klein ISD by the Klein ISD Education Foundation in 2014.
“No one knew how long this adventure would take to complete or how long it would last, but at last, here it is,” Klein ISD Education Foundation President Bill Lakin said.
Community member and Klein ISD parent Jenna Knight had previously only heard about the wonders of the STEAM Express from her robotics-obsessed daughter, Ava, so she was thrilled to climb aboard the teal trailer herself at the 5-year celebration.
“My little one is my STEM kid,” she said. “This is the first time I’ve gotten to see it, and I just love it. I love how hands-on it is for the kids and how they’re exposed to so many different things and opportunities, regardless of their abilities or anything else, they can find what sparks their interest.”
PBK, a loyal, long-time partner of the district, helped throughout the two-year planning, design, and building process to bring the STEAM Express from an idea to a reality. Ian Powell, Managing Partner with PBK, said it’s hard to believe five years have passed since.
“We’re excited to celebrate this milestone with the Klein Education Foundation and Klein ISD, and we look forward to working on creative learning environments with both teams in the future,” he said.
One of the many smiling faces throughout the event was that of Bill Nebeker, the STEAM Express Program Coordinator.

“Since day one, Bill Nebeker has been the conductor and face of the STEAM Express so it’s only fitting that as we celebrate the fifth anniversary that we also recognize and thank Bill for his five years of dedicated service to the STEAM Express and the students it serves throughout Klein ISD,” Klein ISD Education Foundation President Bill Lakin said as he presented Bill Nebeker with a plaque.
“The last 5 years have been a whirlwind of excitement from the students, teachers, administration, and the community of Klein ISD,” he said. “I have five wonderful years of stories.”
In honor of the five-year anniversary of the beloved STEAM Express, the Klein ISD Education Foundation Board of Directors voted to fund a new exterior wrap for the STEAM Express truck and trailer.
