Schultz Elementary Receives Grant to Bring Language to Life
Our wonderful Klein ISD Education Foundation, community members, and Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown climbed aboard the Celebration Express on December 4 to deliver big checks and even bigger smiles to grant recipients across the district. The Klein ISD Education Foundation accepts grant applications twice a year to encourage, facilitate, and recognize creative projects that lead to academic achievement for our Klein ISD students.
Schultz Elementary knows that readers are leaders, which is why this grant sponsored by Caldwell Companies will be beneficial for years to come.
“Every day at Schultz, we have a 45-minute intervention time for students that are not quite where they need to be in reading,” fourth-grade teacher Melanie Smith said. “We’ve assessed all of our fourth-graders and we determined that some of these students may have difficulty with what we call ‘orthographic mapping,’ so we go back to the basics to learn how our language is made up of sounds and how letters go with those sounds.”
This is known as Tier One Intensified Intervention for fourth-grade students. During these 45 minutes, these students build orthographic mapping with games. With the support of this grant, quality word builders, magnetic handwriting paper, and other manipulatives will help students decode and hear individual sounds in words. Students will experience success in “breaking the code” and in sharing their discoveries with other students in listening, speaking, and discussion. This grant will serve as a model for other teachers on how to implement foundational instructional practices for struggling readers.
We are so grateful and proud to live and work in a district with a resource like the Klein ISD Education Foundation that supports our educators, who are continually challenging the norm and disrupting the status quo.
This fall, the Celebration Express delivered grants totaling $56,650 that will bring education to life for our learners. From a book vending machine to a mock pharmacy, our fall 2019 grant recipients are innovative, engaging, and inspirational.
