Hometown Olympian Named Alumnus of the Month

Five-time Olympic medal winner, Chad Hedrick, is adding another honor to his case after being honored as the Klein ISD Alumnus of the Month.

“There’s just so many memories here…it was a very special place for me to grow up,”
Hedrick said. “I’m glad to be here today to represent KISD.”

Chad Hedrick is a Klein native, born and raised in Champion Forest and Spring Creek Oaks. Chad attended Brill, Strack and Klein High. In 1984, Chad’s dad Paul opened Skate Champions, which is still open today. That is where Chad fell in love with skating. He put on his first pair of skates when he was just two years old, and he would spend six to eight hours a day at the rink. When Chad turned 17, he became a professional inline skater, the most decorated ever, winning nine straight World Overall Champions and 52 World Championship victories before switching to the ice in 2002. That year Chad moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where he began ice speed skating. Chad won his first gold medal for the United States at the Olympics in speed skating after 26 months. He finished his ice skating career winning five Olympic medals, and he is the first man to skate six miles in under 13 minutes.

Today, Chad is retired from skating and works in real estate. He continues to speak across the Country and in the Klein community about his participation in the Olympics. We are grateful for Chad’s visits to Klein ISD schools as he continues to share his experiences with students and teach them about goal setting, hard work, and determination.
