Vision Through 3D Design

Vision Through 3D Design

Written by Lani Simonton

What is vision? Is it seeing? Is it touching? Is it listening? We believe that one can see using all of their senses. Giving our students the opportunity to see without vision is powerful. Thanks to a grant from the Klein Education Foundation and the wonderful students in the Klein Cain design classes, KISD students with visual impairments now have a new tool to support them in learning.

Vision Through 3D Design is a program started by the librarian at Klein Cain High School for students who were participating in Makerspace Service Projects. Her students were not only creative and intelligent, but they had a heart to serve others. There an idea began to form that would go from creating 3D trinkets to 3D materials with a purpose. The designs would be created by students in the Design Class. They began creating pages and books for students with visual impairments. These books could teach the alphabet, numbers, and even short stories. Pages could come to life utilizing 3D design.

The materials are then printed by the Vision Program and used with students when needed. Our future goal is to encourage students from the classes at Klein Cain to visit our students who read Braille and see how their creations are impacting students with vision impairments.

What else has the Vision Through 3D Design done? With the use of the 3D printer we have begun to create 3D maps and models to teach students concepts and give them a snapshot of the world that would sometimes be hard to share.

“I can think of no greater purpose for our students to have than to learn to make life easier by serving others with their talents and abilities.”
