Learn How Klein ISD Plant Operations Protects Us

Klein ISD Plant Operations is changing the infection prevention game with the Protexus cleaning system. Protexus is a state-of-the-art device that is used to clean and sanitize our facilities for students, staff, and community members.

With advanced technology, it’s able to provide immediate infection control in outbreak situations. Each Klein ISD campus is equipped with a Protexus system to ensure a safe, affordable, and highly effective approach to cleaning.

“As a district, we strive for continuous improvement and that goes beyond the classroom,” Klein ISD Director of Plant Operations Scott Lazar said. “That applies in our department as well. We want to keep kids healthy, in seats, learning so we are always searching for ways to make that job easier and more efficient while saving taxpayer dollars. When we found Protexus, we found something that does that.”

How does it work?

The Protexus electrostatic sprayer and pump atomized PURTABS, which are safer-than-bleach disinfecting and sanitizing tablets. Inside of the nozzle, the droplets pass through an electrode, creating a magnetic charge spray that wraps around a surface to sanitize and disinfect. This works the same with the handheld and backpack version of the Protexus electrostatic sprayer.

Basically, the electrostatic disinfecting and sanitizing spray has a charge to it that allows it to wrap around a surface such as a table or a desk, making it much more effective than a human wiping down the entire thing.

“Until now, there wasn’t a food consumption area sanitizer that didn’t have to have a clean water rinse after,” Lazar said. “This is the first product that’s FDA-approved to use in our cafeterias. That makes it possible to provide a clean eating area for students during back-to-back lunches.”

The power of Protexus

According to Protexus’ website, the system reaches 3X more surfaces in the same amount of time it would take with buckets, rags, wipes, or other infection control tools. Each time Lazar and his department consider a new product, they challenge it.

“We use Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) monitoring to test the efficacy of our cleaning programs,” Lazar said.

ATP testing uses a surface swab to measure cleanliness. The most stringent cleanliness level is that of a hospital. If a surface measures in at 100 or less on the monitor, it’s considered passing. Guess what level Klein ISD Plant Operations strives to maintain. You guessed it, exactly the same.

Protexus took a Plant Operations facility restroom from 100 to 12 in a matter of moments. Klein ISD Assistant Director of Plant Operation Curtis Parks said that Protexus has increased cleanliness while decreasing students’ reactions to chemicals.

“Ultimately, this system helps us maximize our effectiveness all-around,” he said. “The product is so safe and there’s no high-touch point that goes without disinfection.”

As an added bonus, the custodial staff and students alike enjoy the benefits of Protexus. After all, it keeps kids safe and it looks cool!
