Storytime Online

Storytime Online

Children love storytime. There’s something about listening to someone read or retell a tale that captures our attention, not to mention that listening is a critical skill for language development, communication and general academic achievement. For this article, I’ve compiled a list of digital storytelling sites that can be used with children of all ages.

Storyline Online is created by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, a non-profit literacy program, and the stories are read aloud by award-winning actors who bring the stories to life. Each online book includes a supplemental curriculum created by teachers and features a free downloadable app for mobile devices.

The Spanish Experiment

For our bilingual learners, I found a collection of stories that are read aloud in Spanish but that can also be translated into English right on the screen. Also included are free online beginner Spanish lessons with audio. Check out The Spanish Experiment.

Vooks is, according to the site, “an ever-growing streaming library of animated children’s storybooks.” What is unique about Vooks is that the text is animated as it is read aloud. There are no ads and probably the best thing is that educators receive a free 1-year subscription.

Children’s Storybooks Online

This is a simple site that features online books for children to read on their own. There is no audio or video to these books, but the titles are categorized into varying reading levels for younger children, older children, and young adults. There are also some fun activities on the Children’s Storybooks Online Site.

The aforementioned sites feature a good sampling of what is available online to educators, but there are many other sites worth checking out. Many public libraries feature online book titles of all genres and for all ages and reading abilities. The following is a list of a few others worth checking. Enjoy!
