Klein ISD Students Certified in Emergency Response

From putting out flames to assessing and bandaging wounds, more than 300 students are certified and ready to handle it all.
Students from a variety of pathways across the district gathered Monday for a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training where students received hands-on emergency training from industry professionals through the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management’s Teen CERT program.
“The Teen CERT Program was developed by FEMA to raise involvement from high school-aged students,” Teen CERT Coordinator Earl Smith said. “This is important so they bring the message of preparedness in disasters back to their homes and possibly become involved in their campus emergency operation plans.”
These future first responders, EMT’s, nurses, and lawyers are now CERT-certified and able to answer the call of service in an emergency situation.
“The medical training is definitely helping me with the situations and career path I want to go into,” Klein Collins senior Cody Hendrickson said. “Klein definitely works hard to give us hands-on experience, which is something that will help us.”
This training program brought textbook knowledge to life for our students and their proud coordinators and teachers enjoyed watching it all unfold.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our students who are working towards gaining certifications in their future career field,” Advanced Nursing Pathway Coordinator Kristen Haggard said. “This allows them to fulfill their purpose by working hand-in-hand with individuals in the community who actually perform these jobs.
In addition to essential safety procedures, our students also explored the value of team building and bonding in any profession.
Huge thanks to the dedicated volunteers from CERT, Klein Fire Department, and Harris County Citizens Corps for making this possible!
