The Purpose Pillar

On our Holdsworth journey, we’ve been studying the 5 Pillars of Personal Leadership via the Mentora Institute. Those Pillars are Purpose, Growth, Self-Realization, Love, and Wisdom. I’ve found every pillar to offer important information. Today I’d like to focus on information learned about the Purpose Pillar.

Leonardo da Vinci once said, “You will never have a greater or lesser dominion than that over yourself…the height of a man’s success is gauged by his self-mastery. He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.”

To establish dominion over self, we need to have a purpose to help guide us. Purpose can guide life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, offer a sense of direction, and create meaning. For some people, purpose is connected to vocation—meaningful, satisfying work. For others, their purpose lies in their responsibilities to their family or friends.

Oftentimes we find ourselves baffled when trying to identify our purpose or move towards our purpose. If you’re feeling a crisis of purpose in your life, I would like to share the following information that I found to be very powerful.

The Path to Purpose

Read below – You could be at any one of the following 6 stages in your pursuit of purpose:

  • FUSING: There is an increasing alignment between your everyday life and work and your purpose; you are deeply committed to personal growth as a path to your purpose.
  • FOCUSING: You engage in a more conscious pursuit of your values and purpose. There is a sharpening of focus but also a struggle to commit to the change you need to in order to get more committed.
  • DEFINING: You start to formulate the broad contours of your values, principles, and purpose.
  • SEARCHING: You begin a search for something deeper; you have an openness to questioning your core beliefs.
  • STIRRING: You experience a sense of emptiness, drift, inauthenticity, “same old, same old”; a growing desire to get more out of life.
  • CRUISING: You are on autopilot; your life is unexplored, unexamined and undirected.

Upon identifying the stage you’re in, please note the ten principles listed below that can help you identify the right purpose for yourself.

10 Principles to Forge the Right Purpose

Here are some guidelines on how to forge the right purpose in life for yourself:

Principle 1 The more you explore the hard questions about life, the more you create the conditions from which your ultimate purpose can emerge.

Principle 2 Purpose does not have to be grand and visible in the eyes of the world. Some of us will have a qualitative impact, and others will have a quantitative impact. Both are critical for humanity to flourish.

Principle 3 Even when you don’t have purpose, your purpose can be to find your purpose.

Principle 4 Purpose isn’t a goal; it is based on a broader values-foundation that is then translated into the right goals. These goals will evolve with time.

Principle 5 Sometimes you may find yourself stuck. Maybe it is time to revise your purpose. Sometimes you may experience a defining moment. Will you take notice, and will you act on it?

Principle 6 It takes effort not only in finding your purpose but also in committing to the pursuit of purpose. Cultivating self-discipline is key.

Principle 7 In addition to your inner journey, forging a purpose-driven life requires you to wage outer battles. But ultimately, if your purpose is worthy, most people will respect you and accept you for who you are.

Principle 8 Purpose, by definition, means that you are saying NO to many worthy goals and priorities. Purpose provides you with a personal imperative, and moral legitimacy, in walking away from these other goals and priorities.

Principle 9 You cannot do full justice to your purpose unless you are committed to your own growth.

Principle 10 You can integrate your purpose across a wide range of pursuits. Ultimately, your every moment and every act could be infused with your purpose.

I hope you find this information beneficial as you continue your path of purpose.
