Meet Klein ISD’s Theatrical Design UIL State Qualifier

Meet Klein ISD’s Theatrical Design UIL State Qualifier

Klein High School sophomore Reyana Tran has been recognized as a State Qualifier in the UIL Theatrical Design Contest 2020.

Reyana’s interest in costume design started at a young age. She enjoyed making homemade Halloween costumes with her dad. Her passion and talent only grew when she joined theater at Strack Intermediate.

“I began visualizing how plays would look and designing the costumes just for fun,” she said. “I never would’ve imagined I would be able to turn my passion for art and design into opportunities like this.”

Becoming a State Qualifier, though, is much more than simply putting a pencil to paper. Reyana had to read “Life is a Dream” by Pedro Calderon de la Barca and design costumes for specific characters that involve the challenges of time travel and sustainability. It’s quite technical, really. Reyana had to dig deep into the play’s literature and submit a paper that justified her artistic choices!

“Being a state qualifier gives me a sense of accomplishment,” Reyana said. “I’m glad that I had this opportunity to try my hand at designing  something that required so much creativity and individuality. It was such an enjoyable challenge for me as an artist.”

After hearing of Reyana’s accomplishment, Klein High Director of Theatre Tina Domino is one proud “drama mama.”

“I am so proud of Rey for a multitude of reasons,” Domino said. “She is an excellent student, a creative and conscientious costume designer, and has an incredible artistic gift. Her empathy for others, flexibility and perseverance play a key part in her success as a costume designer and leader in Klein Drama.”

Reyana plans to pursue a career in animation and concept art, or possibly a pathway in fashion design. She knows her experiences in Klein has provided a solid foundation for that.

“Klein Drama has helped me grow as a person more than I had ever expected,” Reyana said. “I’m pretty shy so I’ve become more comfortable sharing my ideas and growing my leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.”

Last year, Reyana was also nominated for a Tommy Tune Award for Best Costume Design for her take on costumes in the production of “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
