Caring for the Whole Student: Brain and Belly

Caring for the Whole Student: Brain and Belly

Although the COVID-19 pandemic forced our school buildings to close, Klein ISD remains open, not only to teach our students, but feed them too.

The Klein ISD Nutrition and Food Services team sought out, applied for, and were awarded grants from GENYOUth and Dairy Max to supply much-needed resources for meal distribution and delivery efforts throughout COVID-19.

“To respond to and support our community during the COVID-19 global health pandemic, our department is serving meals to our students in a completely different way,” Klein ISD Director of Nutrition and Food Services Doug Massey said.

Throughout the school closures, our dedicated Nutrition and Food Services team is serving curbside meals, including a hot lunch and take-home meals, to households for all children under the age of 18.

In order to serve the curbside meals safely and remain in compliance with CDC guidance and local, state, and national regulations, the department needed additional supplies and resources.

“We have served over 219,782 meals since starting our curbside meal service,” Massey said. “We know many students rely on these meals each and every day to stay healthy, and we want to remain a continued resource for them during this time and we are thankful that these grants help us do just that.”

Thank you to our wonderful partnerships, GENYouth and Dairy Max, for helping the Klein Family. And, as always, thank you to our outstanding Nutrition and Food Services team for caring for the whole student – brain and belly!
Meals are served every Monday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., or until all meals are distributed. For more information, visit
