Roth Elementary Achieves Great Expectations Model School Status

Roth Elementary recently achieved the prestigious honor of being named a Great Expectations Model School. The school’s principal, faculty, and staff worked diligently to accomplish this impressive goal.

“We are so excited to have the Great Expectations program at Roth Elementary,“ Roth Elementary Principal Gail McGuire said. “We truly believe this program teaches our students skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Our teachers and students set high expectations for themselves and meet those goals daily. I have seen our students transform through this program, and our teachers continuously challenge every student to give their best.  It has been so exciting to see the culture change and grow for the better on our campus.”

Roth is a showcase for the rewarding benefits that Great Expectations provides students, faculty, staff, parents and the community, and it will be visited by other schools/districts. Great Expectations schools have a culture of respect and high academic achievement.

“I am so proud of the commitment of our teachers and students to this rewarding program,” Klein ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jenny McGown said. “I’ve seen inspirational acts of kindness, growing self-esteem, and belief in the power of setting high expectations. Our teachers do an incredible job of providing challenging, engaging learning experiences and bringing out the best in every student.”

The Great Expectations Program, founded in 1991, is a scientifically-based, research educational reform model that emphasizes a climate of mutual respect and academic excellence. The program represents an approach to learning that empowers teachers to expect and to get the best from students; it rekindles the excitement of discovery among both students and teachers, and it pushes everyone involved to greater heights of achievement.

“The school is truly a shining star in the community, state, and nation,” Dr. Linda Dzialo, President and CEO of Great Expectations said. “The staff and faculty are to be highly commended for their efforts. We are overjoyed to add them to our list of ‘Showcase Schools.”

The basic principles of the program are high expectations for students, a learning climate based on mutual respect between student and teacher, student self-esteem, a belief that all students can learn, positive teacher attitude, and highly skilled and knowledgeable teachers who inspire and enable students to achieve success.

To be named a Great Expectations Model School, over 90 percent of the teachers must successfully implement all of the classroom practices. The school’s principal must also model the classroom practices, and the school needs to serve as a standard that other administrators and educators can visit and learn from.

The Great Expectations training model is guided by six basic tenets and 17 classroom practices. The tenets and practices provide guidelines for program training and implementation, and they serve as standards for evaluating Great Expectations schools.

The basic tenets include:
– High expectations
– Teacher attitude and responsibility
– Building self-esteem
– All children can learn
– Climate of mutual respect
– Teacher knowledge and skill
