Metzler Elementary Recognized as Visible Learning Certified School

Metzler Elementary Recognized as Visible Learning Certified School

After implementing Visible Learning five years ago, Metzler Elementary is now being recognized as one of only three schools in North America this year to become a Visible Learning Certified School.

The  Visible Learning Certified School Award is the highest award given by Corwin, an educational publishing company, to schools that demonstrate a deep commitment to continued implementation of the Visible Learning principles.

Metzler was not the only Klein school to receive this honor, Lemm Elementary was also recognized earlier this summer. You can read more about the Lemm Visible Learning journey here

Visible Learning is the work of John Hattie whose research focuses on influences that impact student achievement. He wanted to know how students learn best. After years of research and analysis of over 250+ influences on student achievement, he was able to answer his question and, ultimately, find what makes the greatest impact.

Visible Learners know where they are in their learning, how they are doing, and where they are going next. They set learning goals, are reflective, and know when to seek help from peers. Teachers provide success criteria so learners understand what it means to be successful in their learning.

Teachers post Learning Intentions and Success Criteria for students to understand what they need to know to be successful.

Students at Metzler Elementary use feedback to set learning goals. Teachers encourage students to talk about their learning and what it means to be successful. Students understand what their reading levels are, where they are in their learning, and now most importantly, they own their own learning.

When students become the teachers; Student at Metzler records a video teaching a math concept for her classmates.

Former Principal Lakita Combs started this Visible Learning journey with Metzler five years ago and knows the impact it has had on the employees and students.

“The students at Metzler see themselves as their own teachers,” Combs said. “They take pride in sharing their progress and articulating what they are learning, how they are doing with their learning, and describing their next learning steps.”

Current Metzler Principal Danis Boone is excited to continue the Visible Learning journey with the students and staff at Metzler.

“What excites me about this award is that it demonstrates the commitment our teachers have to professional learning and improving the learning of our students” Boone said. “Metzler will continue on the Visible Learning journey through continued professional development, engaging in ongoing reflective discussions and co-constructing expectations – and of course celebrating the successes experienced by teachers and students along the way.”

This is not the first time Metzler was recognized for their work with Visible Learning. You can read more about their success here

We are so proud of both Metzler Elementary and Lemm Elementary for their several years of hard work, focus, and commitment to the success of EVERY child.
