Dr. Jenny McGown Named One of Nation’s Top Superintendents To Watch
Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown is garnering national recognition for her dynamic leadership and intentional efforts to engage with students, families, staff, and community members.
Dr. McGown has been named as a “Superintendent to Watch” by the National School Public Relations Association, one of only 24 superintendents selected across the Nation, according to an announcement made today by the organization.
NSPRA’s “Superintendents to Watch” program recognizes superintendents with fewer than five years of experience who demonstrate dynamic, fast-paced leadership with strong communication at its core.
“I can say without hesitation, contemplation, or reservation, that Dr. McGown being selected as a ‘Superintendent to Watch’ is a precursor of good things to come for her and Klein ISD,” Klein ISD Board President Doug James said. “In this unprecedented, unpredictable, and fast-paced year, Dr. McGown has led this district with dignity and determination. She is an educational force that in a very powerful way is writing her signature on what being a successful district leader looks like.”
In a letter about the honor, NSPRA Executive Director Rich Bagin, APR said Dr. McGown was selected because of the many ways she uses “communication technology in innovative and effective ways to engage and inform the Klein community, and to expand two-way communication and outreach efforts.”
“I’m excited and humbled to receive this award from NSPRA and be recognized among this year’s educational leaders,” Dr. McGown said. “It’s my honor to tell the amazing story of our Klein Family—the commitment of our talented educators, the hard work of our incredible students, and the support of our dedicated families and community members.”
Dr. McGown has devoted her professional education career to Klein ISD. She has served as a teacher, campus leader, district leader, and now, as the first female superintendent of schools in the district’s history. As a result, she’s had the unique opportunity of observing the district through various leadership capacities and continues to foster positive relationships with stakeholders and relentlessly pursues the success of every students’ promise to exit with a purpose in Klein ISD
“A quality education is the tool through which our community, our nation, and our world achieve excellence and equity,” Dr. McGown said. “All students deserve to attend schools in a place that supports unleashing their talents, embracing their creativity, and empowering their learning. Klein ISD is that place, and I’m thankful and honored to serve here.”
Dr. McGown has made communications and community engagement a cornerstone of her administration and has devoted intentional efforts to reach stakeholders where they are to facilitate open, honest two-way conversations. These efforts include Facebook Live events and listening sessions with the Klein community as well as focus groups with students and educators across the district.
Dr. McGown has served as Klein ISD Superintendent since July 2019 and has also received various honors, including the 2020 Sam Houston State University Distinguished Educator of the Year, 2019 AAUW Outstanding Woman in Education, a Houston BizWomen Headliner in Education in 2018, and one of the top 40 professionals under 40 across all sectors in the greater Houston area by the Houston Business Journal in 2017.
With her leadership, Klein ISD was also selected by HEB as one of five finalists for its prestigious HEB Excellence in Education Award and was the first and only school district to win the Houston Business Journal’s Innovation Award two years in a row (1,2). Additionally, Dr. McGown earned Klein ISD’s first National Schools of Character Award as the inaugural principal of Zwink Elementary.
