Klein High School Senior Receives Student Heroes Award

Klein High School Senior Sneha Shenoy has been awarded the 2020 Heroes Award for State Board of Education (SBOE) District 6.

This prestigious award recognizes only 15 students who were selected statewide and acknowledges their acts of kindness, charity, and selfless service they offer others.

“I nominated Sneha for the Texas State Board of Education Student Hero Award for this year,” Klein High School Teacher Kristen Haggard said. “And I knew she was going to win.”

Sneha’s biggest accomplishment to merit this award is her founding of the Pledge to Distance campaign. According to her campaign website, Pledge to Distance is a campaign aimed at promoting social distancing through unique and personalized artwork.

“I started Pledge To Distance as a way to promote social distancing in our community, especially among teens, Sneha said.”Social distancing is such a new concept, as we are used to our busy day-to-day lives and normal schedules, however, it is imperative that this concept be taken seriously in the world right now. Since I was little, I’ve loved art and drawing as hobbies and I thought this would be a great way to use this passion to create awareness for an important message.”

The way Pledge To Distance works is an individual will take a pledge to commit to social distancing and wearing a mask during the pandemic. In exchange for the pledge, Sneha or someone from her team will create a customized piece of artwork of the individual which shows the name of the person covering their face in the shape of a mask, indicating they have Pledged to Distance.

“I started this campaign not knowing how it would grow,” she said. “I am thrilled with the amount of support this campaign has received in such a short amount of time, so I am beyond grateful that we now have a team supporting this campaign to make it successful.”

What started out as a small campaign by Sneha and her friends has blossomed into a movement that has impacted all 50 states and 18 countries outside the United States. Congratulations Sneha! Your Klein ISD community is extremely proud of you.
