Benfer Elementary Awarded $6,000 for Innovative Garden Grant

Benfer Elementary Awarded $6,000 for Innovative Garden Grant

The Klein ISD Education Foundation, community members, and Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown masked-up and climbed aboard the Celebration Express on December 10 and delivered large checks to grant recipients across the district.

The Klein ISD Education Foundation accepts grant applications twice a year to encourage, facilitate, and recognize creative projects that lead to academic achievement for our Klein ISD students.

Benfer Elementary will use its $6,190 grant sponsored by ICI Construction to create a garden for learning and growth outside of regular classroom experience that provides real-life and relevant academic opportunities. The garden includes the collaborative effort of teachers, students, and the community to incorporate academic and social skills in an authentic and hands-on way.

Students will apply Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Writing TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) with multiple fun, yet challenging activities. All students will take part in the garden in a variety of ways; lower grade levels begin with observing and then grow into helping to take care of this area, developmental students and early childhood can explore and observe, Specials classes (Music, Art, and PE) can help students to make connections with the garden to music, art, and physical activity.  Benfer will also start a Garden Club to include students, parents, and community members.  An estimated 800 children will be impacted through this work.

“It’s always a great day when we are able to help make an educators’ dreams come true in Klein ISD,” KEF Director Christy Spisak said.

We are so grateful and proud to live and work in a district with a resource like the Klein ISD Education Foundation that supports our educators, who are continually challenging the norm and disrupting the status quo.

This fall, the Celebration Express delivered grants totaling $90,090 that will bring education to life for our learners. From a research and observation garden to WT2 translator earbuds, our Fall 2020 grant recipients are innovative, engaging, and inspirational.

Thank you so much to all our grant sponsors who made all this possible. Your giving contribution will help further the educational experience of every Klein ISD student.
