Klein Oak Alum Raises $1 Million for National Multiple Sclerosis Society

Klein Oak Alum Raises $1 Million for National Multiple Sclerosis Society

This year, Team Audrey’s Heroes, a group that raises money through National Bike, Walk, and MudFest events to support those living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), hit their $1 million goal.

For 1996 Klein Oak graduate and team captain Audrey Blank, living with MS, a neurological disease that affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve, has been unpredictable and challenging.

“You never know if it is going to be a good day or a day with symptoms,” Blank said. “On days that my MS flares up, I have trouble with balance, coordination, and cognitive processing. I can forget words mid-sentence and struggle with the simplest tasks. In the beginning, I had trouble walking and using my right side. I often slurred my words and had extreme fatigue.”

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), an estimated 2.3 million people worldwide live with this disease and Team Audrey’s Heroes works to help fund research, community programs, financial planning, career counseling, and family support for these individuals.

“MS can affect the person living with the disease in a variety of ways,” Blank said. “Joining the NMSS gave me a support system and answers to questions related to my disease, and that’s why I work hard to support them.”

Many living with MS, realizing the effects the disease has on their families is evident reasonably quickly.

“My daughter was three years old when I was diagnosed,” Blank said. “She had to hear me tell her ‘Mommy’s legs aren’t working today, I can’t climb the stairs’ or ‘Mommy has no energy to play hide and seek.’ That was a determining factor for me to get involved. I knew I wanted to be an active role in my daughter’s life, and I didn’t want to give up the career that I loved.”

Before being diagnosed with MS in 2007, Audrey worked at Kuehnle Elementary as a teacher then was promoted to Early Learning Program Coordinator for the Klein ISD Teaching and Learning Department.

“Some of my greatest memories were made growing up in Klein ISD. I attended Roth, Hildebrandt, and Klein Oak before working in Klein as a teacher and administrator,” Blank said. “I am proud to be a part of the Klein ISD community because of the district’s work to support life-long learners.”

With her $1 million goal achieved, Audrey could not be more grateful for the servant hearts of the students and staff in Klein ISD.

“I have been honored to have the support of students from the Klein High School HOSA at our MS events,” Blank said. “I appreciate the students and faculty who volunteer, participate, or sponsor my team and me. Together we will create a world free of MS. To all those who have supported me, thank you for saving my life one pedal, one step, one donation at a time. Thank you for being my MS heroes.”
