“Pre-AP” Transitioning to “Klein Prep”

The “Pre-AP” label is now a registered trademark of the College Board, and during the 2021-2022 academic year, school districts will no longer be allowed to use this designation for courses that have not been officially designated as on level (not advanced or honors level) Pre-AP courses by the College Board.
To rename the current Pre-AP courses available in Klein ISD, a committee of diverse stakeholders from our Klein Family of Educators convened to make suggestions. The renaming of the Pre-AP courses will be Klein Prep, with the acronym “KP” identified in the course catalog, course selection sheets, and high school transcripts for the 2021-2022 school year.
For example, Pre-AP ALG 1 will change to Klein Prep (KP): Algebra 1 KP or Algebra 1 KP/GT
Additionally, after a two-year research study, a group of dedicated teachers from the Advanced Academics Architectural Design Team created the Klein Prep Course Descriptor:
Students in Klein ISD advanced Klein Prep (KP) Courses are expected to research, analyze, and propose solutions to real-world problems based on the practice of interdisciplinary study, literary analysis, problem-based learning, communication, collaboration, goal setting, and self-reflection. To demonstrate mastery of academic content and attainment of post-secondary readiness skills, students will create advanced/sophisticated products and presentations.
“It is indeed quite an honor to recognize this brilliant group of dynamic, thoughtful, and innovative teachers with the rename of Klein Prep. These teacher leaders conducted research and created a blueprint/framework for successful student futures based on Klein ISD Profile of a Learner and High-Quality Teaching Guiding Documents, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, College and Career Readiness Standards, Rigor and Relevance FrameworkⓇ, and the Texas State Plan for Gifted/Talented Instruction, ” Advanced Academics Instructional Officer Kathleen Plott said.
In addition to rigorous coursework provided by Klein Prep, Klein ISD will continue to offer advanced weighted courses to prepare students for challenging high school coursework in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Dual Credit (DC) courses.
Please visit kleinisd.net/pathways for more information and descriptions of these courses. Also – more information will be coming out in January about a Facebook LIVE Q&A about advanced courses, pathways, and course selection. This will be something you don’t want to miss!
