Klein Oak IB Students Awarded Program Diploma and Sash

Klein Oak IB Students Awarded Program Diploma and Sash

On Tuesday, December 15, Klein Oak High School International Baccalaureate® students were awarded the IB Diploma and graduate stole that signifies their completion of the esteemed program.

The IB staff at Klein Oak honored the students’ hard work and achievement through a special celebration to commemorate their commitment and dedication to high academic rigor and service.

“It was so fun seeing all the students. They had such pride picking up their diploma and sash that it brought tears to some of their eyes with the realization that they achieved such a big goal…,” IB Liaison & English Dept. Chair Kristy Munger said.

The history of the Klein Oak International Baccalaureate® program began in 2004 and was authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. With the leadership of the previous principal, Ms. Kelly Schumacher and English teacher and IB Coordinator teacher, Linda Garner, the IB program soon began to flourish nearly seventeen years later! What began with 6 students has now grown to:

  • 71 Seniors
  • 68 Juniors
  • 67 Sophomores
  • 74 Freshmen

Currently, the success of the IB program for Klein ISD students at Klein Oak High School is under the campus leadership of Principal Thomas Hensley,  IB Program Liaison Kristy Munger, IB Campus Advisor/Counselor Elizabeth Bowling, and Assistant Principal Dr. Danny Bonner.  Additionally, Klein ISD Advanced Academic Services provides district level program and instructional  support through Imee Villarreal, IB Coordinator.

“IB is the most challenging and rigorous college preparatory program offered to high school students worldwide, and we are grateful that we can provide this opportunity to our students in Klein ISD,” Villarreal states,  “IB prepares students with essential 21st century characteristics and skills needed to succeed in their post-secondary endeavors.”

In Texas, IB Diploma graduates receive a minimum of 24 hours of college credit for students who have obtained an IB Diploma and received scores of at least 4 on all examinations taken to achieve the diploma. The IB curriculum is internationally known for its rigor and many students report they are more than prepared for post-secondary education upon graduation.

“These students have logged hours of service in the community, completed a 4,000 word research paper, and taken high stakes tests over the most rigorous courses that Klein ISD offers,” IB Teacher Tiffany Dzubin said. “These students are truly an exceptional group.  I am honored to be able to work with them each year.”

Previously invited parents and families also joined their students for this special occasion. It was a great time recognizing the academic excellence that always permeates within our district and the Klein Community.
