Klein ISD Trustee Doug James Reflects on Black History Month

Klein ISD Trustee Doug James Reflects on Black History Month

During Black History Month, we want to share a special letter to our Klein Family from Klein ISD Board Trustee Mr. Doug James.

“I love Black History Month!

Black History Month gives me, as an African-American man, fresh opportunities to learn more and reflect on the historical contributions of black people in the world!

As we celebrate Black History Month in 2021, let us be reminded about how African Americans have uniquely and significantly helped to shape the landscape of America, Texas, and yes, Klein ISD — culturally, politically, socially, and economically — and I am grateful and humbled to be a part of this legacy.

Even as we struggle to process the history we’re all living through right now, today more than ever, the words of the great abolitionist, statesman and orator, Frederick Douglass continues to serve as a clarion call, “We have to do with the past only as we can make it useful to the present and the future.”

As a Klein ISD Trustee, I strive to ensure that when EVERY student enters with a promise and exits with a purpose, their authentic perspectives, experiences, and discoveries of African-American contributions are an integral part of their learning. So, during Black History Month this year, let us pause and reflect on our own miseducation and uncultivated relationships across racial lines and continue to become the kind of school district that creates an atmosphere of equity, understanding, and social justice as a norm — not just in February, but all year long.”
