Klein ISD Saves $70 Million Through Energy Conservation Efforts

Klein ISD has saved $70 million in efforts to conserve energy. Through the district’s participation in both Centerpoint Energy’s SCORE and Retro-commissioning Programs, Klein ISD continues to remain at the forefront of innovation in energy conservation.

The SCORE program is designed to incentivize the district for installing energy-efficient equipment with either new construction or renovations, while the Retro-commissioning Program offers the district low-cost or no-cost opportunities to improve the efficiency of existing equipment.

“Klein ISD is so grateful for the 14 years that we’ve been able to partner with Centerpoint Energy. The incentives earned from increasing energy efficiency at a few schools are then utilized to fund other energy-efficient projects throughout the district,” said Melissa Crizer, Klein ISD Energy Manager.  “As energy efficiency increases, our energy costs decrease. This allows Klein ISD to redirect the savings to our students and staff. Being able to provide additional funding for our kids is the most exciting part of what we do!”

Due to the increasing cost of water, Klein ISD is also currently working collaboratively with the Houston-Galveston Subsidence District to decrease irrigation use by adding control systems to our existing irrigation systems.

Since the inception of the Klein ISD Energy Management department in 2007, the goal has been to spend less on utilities to spend more in the classroom.

Through working collectively with campuses to schedule only what is needed for events, to turning off exterior lights during holidays and summer months, the district has managed to save more than $70 million since the inception of the program in 2007.
