Teacher Feature: Carla Richards, Krimmel Intermediate

Ms. Carla Richards is a rockstar Eighth Grade ELA teacher at Krimmel Intermediate School. This beloved educator is passionate about instilling a love of literacy and personal discovery in each of her students.

Carla is proud to serve this group of Krimmel Knights as she is a product of Klein ISD herself and attended Krahn Elementary, Doerre Intermediate School, and Klein Oak High School. While she may have started her teaching career in another school district, Carla said it was always her goal to “come home” to Klein ISD.

When asked her favorite part of teaching Eighth Grade ELA Carla said it was all about making literacy connections.

“I love how my students are at an age where they can make personal connections with literature and decide what they truly enjoy reading,” said Richards. “It’s so rewarding to watch them realize that books are the pathway and that there is something out there for everyone.”

Carla also enjoys watching the small victories that unfold inside and outside the four walls of her classroom.

“One of my newer students is a first-time English learner and started the year off speaking very little English. In the morning he’d say ‘good morning’ but that was about it,” said Richards. “Now he is able to hold small conversations and always has a huge smile on his face when he walks into class each day.”

Carla says she is inspired by watching students find their joy in literacy and a place of belonging.

Carla strives to make every one of her students feel welcome in the classroom and a part of things. She knew she wanted to be a teacher from her own experience with her teachers who allowed her to be 100 percent herself. She took this inspiration and paid it forward to her own students.

“I make sure to remind my students that their voice matters and we’re not trying to change them,” said Richards. “You can be who you are and now you’re planted, we just need to add some leaves to your tree so you can grow.”

Ms. Carla Richards is an invaluable member of the #KleinFamily. We love watching her instill her time and talents into the next generation of Klein ISD students.
