Catch Up With the Klein Oak Crochet Club

Catch Up With the Klein Oak Crochet Club

The Klein Oak Crochet Club can be found steady at work Friday afternoons after school. Under the sponsorship of dedicated Math teacher Ms. Kathy Long, the student-led club strives to create a welcoming and engaging environment for all who are interested in joining.

Oak students Elijah Dendinger and Lorelei Husband formed the Crochet Club in 2019 after they noticed Ms. Long’s crocheted animals. The students were fascinated and wanted to learn how to crochet, asking Long to teach them. Long agreed, and the student-led club was formed.

“This club is like a form of meditation for me,” said Mia Gorus, 11th Grade student. “When I’m in Crochet Club, I’m relaxing and working on something and taking my mind off of things. That is my favorite part of the club.”

On average, 25 students show up at each meeting. For Long and the club members, the number isn’t important; it’s the satisfaction and joy obtained from making something with their own hands.

“I love that these students want to learn to crochet while working with others in a safe space to build relationships,” said Long. “It’s learning to learn–not because you’re getting a grade, but just because. That doesn’t happen enough anymore.”

The club has donated handmade scarves and blankets to the homeless and elderly communities.

“In the past, we’ve talked about wanting to donate hats and scarves to the homeless,” said Elijah Dendinger, 12th Grade Student and current Crochet Club President. “As it gets closer to the winter season, we’d love to donate to those in need and make a difference. “

What a fantastic way for students to share in community when learning a new skill and making something by hand!  Any Klein Oak students interested in learning to crochet are welcome to join the club Fridays after school in Room 2010.
