Klein Collins Senior Honored as Yale Bassett Award Recipient

Klein Collins Senior Katrina Machetta is one of 20 students nationwide and the only Texan to receive the 2021 Yale Bassett Award.

The Yale Bassett Award, established by Yale University, honors young leaders in our communities across the nation who “demonstrate a record of creative leadership and public service, academic distinction, and interdisciplinary problem-solving.”

“I am honored and humbled to receive this prestigious award,” said Katrina. “In the things I do, I always try to serve others in every way I can. Born and raised in this beautiful and evolving city, Houston/Spring has a special place in my heart.  It has been instilled in me through my church and family upbringing that we can always make a difference no matter how young.”

As an “avid poet, journalist, and community volunteer,” Katrina strives to give back. Through her work as a Teen Court Advocate of the City of Houston’s Municipal Courts to serving as Poet-In-Residence for the Heritage Society to being the Editor-in-Chief of the Legacy Press, Katrina consistently finds ways to use her talents to be an active voice in our schools and community.

“It is important to me that all voices are heard no matter a person’s age, gender, or background,” said Machetta. “Through my passion for volunteering and writing, I hope to help others, especially the marginalized, the voiceless, and those at the intersectional fringes of society.”

One of the many ways Katrina accomplishes this is through a service-based organization she founded called Crafting Connections.

“Through Crafting Connections, I partnered Key Clubs in Klein ISD and other districts together with nursing homes and assisted living facilities to create meaningful relationships between the young and old through writing workshops, community gatherings, and Bingo Saturdays,” said Katrina. “For the seniors who are blind or hard of hearing, we help them make oral histories of their lives and experiences. Through poetry, writing, and engagement with our elderly, I believe we can resolve the isolation between generations and come together as a community.”

With a firm belief in her purpose, Katrina plans to continue expanding her outreach to as many neighborhoods as possible, especially to underserved communities in our state, country, and the world.

“I have been a student in Klein ISD since the second grade, and for the teachers, counselors, and administrators that have mentored me – I am very grateful and I have learned so much from them that expanded my horizons,” said Katrina. “I am sharing this award with my family, teachers, and volunteers who worked hard with me to make a positive difference. Every year I continually grow and learn as a student, person, and leader.”

There’s no doubt that Katrina will leave a lasting legacy long after she leaves the familiar hallways of Klein Collins High School.

“Katrina is a brilliant young human being with many passions,” said Jill Thompson, Klein Collins Environmental Science teacher. “I know that our planet is in good hands with Katrina soon going out into the world, using her knowledge and motivation to change our future for the better.”

Congratulations, Katrina! Your #kleinfamily is so proud of ALL of your accomplishments (believe us, folks — the list is LONG)! We wish you the best as this school year continues and can’t wait to see what your future holds. Way to go, Tiger!
