Klein Forest Sophomore Clocks Fastest Time in the Nation

Klein Forest Sophomore Clocks Fastest Time in the Nation

Klein Forest student-athlete Jelani Watkins recorded the fastest 100-meter dash in the nation with a stunning 10.21 seconds at the Texas Southern University Relays.

Watkins walked up to the line for what felt like a normal track meet to him, but little did he know that he would set the fastest time across the nation despite some wind conditions.

“Before the race, I was expecting to clock a 10.30 or a 10.40,” Watkins said. “When I heard the announcer shout that my time was the fastest in the nation, I didn’t believe it. The moment itself was so surreal.”

An important part of Watkins’ journey starts from inside his classroom, where he holds himself accountable for succeeding off the track and the field.

“My coaches and teachers have paved the way for me to compete,” Watkins said. “When I need help with something, my teachers are there to help me succeed in my academics and, for that, I’m grateful.”

While competing at State as a freshman, the young Golden Eagle competed in the 100 meter, 200 meter, and 400 meter dash and was a shining representation of an elite athlete at Klein Forest. Watkins and his coaches have high aspirations going into this year’s track season.

“We’re very proud of Jelani, not only for his performance, but for his humble attitude,” Track and Field Coach Remon Smith said. “He’s been working really hard — the commitment he shows day in and day out has been outstanding and there is still more to come.”

Jelani Watkins’ relentless drive and dedication is part of why he is such a stand-out athlete. We are so proud of this Golden Eagle and cannot wait to see what the future holds for him this track season. Jelani, your Klein Family is cheering you on every step of the way!
