Klein Collins CTE Accelerated College Pathway Students Map Out a Big Win
SkillsUSA saw some new competitors this year, and they came to win!
Two teams from the Klein Collins CTE Geospatial Engineering and Land Surveying Accelerated College Pathway took on nine other teams from districts across the state in the SkillsUSA Land Surveying competition. Sophomores Isaac Ha, Tucker Jones, and Quan Pham joined forces as one of those teams and ranked number two in all of Texas, the only state that offers this specialized competition.
“As a first-time competitor I didn’t feel nervous. I felt very confident heading into the competition,” said Isaac Ha. “For months we were being taught by land surveying professionals on how to do everything the competition asked of us.”
This 4-year accelerated college pathway has been offered at Klein Collins since the 2018-2019 school year and is one of ten college pathways offered in Klein ISD.
“I am so proud that we are able to offer such specialized learning to our students, giving them the confidence and skills they need to explore career pathways that interest them,” said Klein Collins Principal Randy Kirk. “I am beyond excited for what the future holds for these students. Congratulations!”
Geospatial Engineering and Land Surveying courses lead students into fields associated with modern mapping technologies such as GIS and GPS to map, collect, and analyze geographic data.. In partnership with Lone Star College-University Park students earn a college Associate degree prior to high school graduation, as well as earning an Occupational Skills Award in GIS from Lone Star College-Cy Fair. In addition to these college credentials, students earn AutoCAD certification, National Society of Professional Surveyors CST I and FAA Remote Drone Pilot certification.
“This CTE pathway has made my academic career challenging — part of the pathway is gaining enough college credit to earn an Associate of Science degree,” Isaac Ha said. “Learning industry skills in high school is a huge benefit in seeking out well-paying jobs post graduation.”
Although these Tigers still have a couple of years before they complete their high school CTE college pathway and continue their education toward earning a Bachelor degree, they are already proving themselves to be great workforce prospects as the next generation of GIS Scientists, Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers, who are needed worldwide.
“I was happy to see the students developing their potential in this field,” said Geospatial Engineering and Land Surveying Coordinator Bradley Schuster. “I see them developing the need to know more and do better in their endeavors. I know that their learning is heading in the right direction.”
Congratulations on your big win Isaac, Tucker and Quan! We are so proud of you all and your achievements.
