Teachers Turn Novel Idea to Grow Young Authors into Reality

Teachers Turn Novel Idea to Grow Young Authors into Reality

Nine Klein ISD teachers worked together to host the inaugural Young Writers Convention. Students from across the District attended the one-day event at Klein Collins High School. They were treated to 16 interactive writing workshops, close competitions, and engaging games in efforts to foster and promote a love of writing and literacy in Klein ISD students.

Cora Winston, an eighth-grade student and aspiring realistic fiction writer, was excited to attend the convention and take home tips and tricks to improve her writing from our very own Klein ISD teachers.

“My favorite part of the convention is the opportunity to hear the teacher’s lectures and receive help so I can better develop my characters and settings,” Cora said. “It’s exciting to be able to build the story and learn from all their different teachings.”

The origin of this inaugural event was an exercise in collaboration as English and Creative Writing Teachers from Klein Forest and Klein Collins High School, Ms. Allie Drain and Ms. Danae Perez, banned together to make this dream a reality for Klein ISD aspiring writers.

“We both attended the Klein Reimagine Learning workshop for creative writing clubs at the beginning of the school year,” Ms. Perez said. “During the workshop, a discussion came up about us organizing such a convention for all of Klein students. Allie and I were very interested in the idea, so we met several times to plan and organize the event.”

Although the Young Writers Convention is in its first year, Ms. Drain and Ms. Perez both hope it continues for years to come. These educators are excited to offer this day of enrichment and fun for our students and hope they gain many things and key takeaways from it.

“We hope students come away from the event to better understand various creative writing skills and the inspiration to create their own stories and poems,” Ms. Drain said. “We hope they form connections with fellow writers across the district. Contrary to what many people believe, writing is not a solitary activity. Having a solid group of fellow writers you can go to for advice and inspiration is important. By bringing our students together, we hope they can form those friendships and grow together as writers.”

2022 Young Writers Convention

Ms. Drain and Ms. Perez would like to thank all who made the Young Writers Convention possible. In addition, a special “thank you” to all teacher panelists, donors, volunteers, and organizers.

We love to see the power of this collaboration to enrich the education of our precious students further!
