Benignus MonART Butterflies Bring New Life to an Old Garden

A group of Benignus third-graders transformed a portion of their school’s outdoor space into a butterfly garden that will make your heart flutter.
The Benignus MonART Butterflies—Molly McCotter, McElney Berry, Callie Jureski, Evie Martin, Ryleigh Reed, and Bryn Luke—shared a vision for what this garden had the potential to be. Starting in September 2021, the girls worked together to bring the garden back to life as a butterfly habitat.
Throughout the past school year, this Gifted and Talented (GT) group of young forever learners decided their GT research project would not only help butterflies but also bring something beautiful back to Benignus Elementary to share with their fellow classmates.
“Watching this amazing group of girls take a seed of an idea and bring it to life has been pretty incredible,” third-grade teacher Nikki Grant said. “I am so proud of the collaboration, logical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving I have witnessed over the past nine months.”
From researching Texas butterflies to finding butterfly hosting plants, this space was created with extreme care and attention to detail. The girls even hosted a plant drive to fill their garden and bring their vision to life. From start to finish, these six students dedicated their time to ensure the garden’s success.
For the Benignus MonART Butterflies, this is just the beginning. Next year, they plan on starting a garden club. The club will be open to all Bengals and will meet monthly to focus on maintaining the garden and keeping the butterflies safe.
Thank you, Benignus MonART Butterflies, for giving back to your Klein family.
