Klein ISD Students Place Among Best in Nation at Speech & Debate National Tournament
Two remarkable Klein ISD students are among the best in the Nation, placing among top scorers at the 2022 National Speech & Debate Tournament.
Klein High Senior Kaylie Walker and Klein Collins Junior Karon Petty traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to represent Klein ISD in the competition.
Every summer, more than 6,000 middle and high school students travel to the largest academic competition in the world to practice the art of debate.
Karon advanced to the quarter-finals and placed within the Top 30 in the Oral Interpretation category. At the same time, Kaylie competed in the Original Informative Speaking category and advanced past preliminaries.
For the 41st year in a row, a Klein High School Speech and Debate student has participated in Nationals. Kaylie represented our Bearkats flawlessly as she competed at Nationals for the second time.
“I would say that my favorite part of not only Nationals but public speaking events is that you have ten minutes and thirty seconds to speak on any topic you want and have an audience listen to you,” Kaylie said. “I’m so blessed that I’ve had two years to compete at Nationals.”
Karon is no stranger to the competition either as he has been to State UIL and the Texas Forensics Association. However, in his first time competing at Nationals for Speech and Debate, Karon is already making a name for himself with his tournament wins.
“The best part of the National tournament was just being in attendance,” Petty said. “Speech and debate give students a voice and getting a chance to use my voice so that thousands of others worldwide can hear me is amazing. Placing Top 16 as a Junior is tough to accomplish, and the fact that I did it shows that hard work pays off.”
Congratulations to both Kaylie and Karon! Your #KleinFamily is proud of your achievement. You’ll always be a winner in our hearts!
