Eagle Scout Gives Back to His Elementary School

Eagle Scout Gives Back to His Elementary School

Former Kuenhle Koala and current Klein High junior and Eagle Scout Addison McDowell has certainly left his mark on Kuehnle by making recess a little more fun.

For his Eagle Scout project, Addison painted the school sidewalks with four interactive activities for students to utilize during recess, some prompting our little learners to use both sides of their brains.

“At Kuehnle, our vision is ‘The Koala Way: Learning. Serving. Leading.’ and Addison has skillfully demonstrated The Koala Way through his act of service,” Kuehnle Elementary Principal Julia Funk said. “His thoughtfulness about what to do for our koalas, we know, will support our students in learning how to play together while offering more activities to do during recess.”

While thinking of options for his service project, Addison recalled his own time in elementary school. He knew he wanted to find innovative ways to enhance student experiences during recess. With this in mind, he opted to update the playground from having only hopscotch to having options for both older and younger students.

“I wanted to do this because I went to school here, and it is a place that I love,” Addison said. “I thought it would be cool to have something like this that the kids can do. I like seeing kids having fun, and I know they will use and enjoy this.”

There are now four sensory pathways on campus for students to play on, including midline walking, block walking, varibeam, and crossover walking. Not only do students get a chance to learn by playing, but these activities also promote positive social interactions.

“I was inspired by my brother, who is also an Eagle Scout and created a U.S. map mural at Epps Island for his project,” Addison said. “I thought what he did was pretty cool, so I decided to do some painting on the ground that kids can play on—I knew it would go well with the school.”

Addison, your servant’s heart is truly inspirational! Thank you for all that you have done for your fellow Kuehnle Koalas!
