Teacher Feature: Joe Nuñez, Klein Oak High School

Mr. Joe Nuñez may be new to the halls of Klein Oak High School, but this dedicated Head Band Director has already proven he is ready to lead the high school’s band to new heights.
Mr. Nuñez comes to our district with 26 years of experience in music education, with his most recent position as a Head Band Director in a neighboring school district. Before his time there, Mr. Nuñez served as Head Band Director at McKinney Boyd High School for 13 years.
Mr. Nuñez is excited to continue his career in Klein ISD and looks forward to leading the band to excellence. This educator’s journey with band and surprise connection with Klein Oak goes back to his days as a student.
“The Klein Oak Band has a great reputation, so that was a great opportunity. What made it special for me is that my predecessor—Mr. Todd Clearwater, who just retired—was also one of my high school band directors back in El Paso before he moved to Klein,” Mr. Nuñez said. “Mr. Clearwater mentored me when I knew I wanted to be a band director. He’s the one who recommended that I go to the University of Houston. Then, when he retired, he reached out and asked if I would consider following him to Klein ISD. I was honored to be recommended for the position by him.”
Mr. Nuñez knew Band was where his passion lay, and he had many fond memories of being involved as a trombone player throughout his student career.
“I loved everything about being in Band,” Mr. Nuñez said. “I fell in love with it and saw my band directors’ impact. I thought, ‘I want to do that someday.’ So I just followed that path. It’s the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do.”
Mr. Nuñez is proud to be at the organization’s helm, preparing students for a successful season. In addition, the dedicated educator is optimistic about the Band’s future as they strive to prepare for competition.
“The Klein Oak Band is filled with great students and talented musicians. I think we’re going to have a great competitive season once competitions get going,” Mr. Nuñez said. “In the spring semester, we’ll focus on concert season and the performance of great literature. I’m looking forward to everything we’re going to be able to do because these students work so hard, and they’re so talented.”
Band is where Mr. Nuñez’s heart lies, and it’s a good thing because he dedicates countless hours to the organization and the betterment of the student-musician.
“Outside the school day, we do eight hours of rehearsal a week, not including game days and contest days. So when you throw in a game day, it’s almost another eight hours in itself,” Mr. Nuñez said. “A contest day is about 12 to 18 hours. It’s a lot of hours and a very time-intensive job. It’s not for everybody, but I love it. I think you must love it to do it for the long term.”
It’s clear to see that the Klein Oak Band is in great hands! Mr. Nuñez, your #KleinFamily is proud to have you as an essential member of our community. We can’t wait to see where you’ll lead the Panther Band!
