Klein Collins Hosts Inaugural Klein ISD Water Polo Team
A sport that consists of a goalie, a left-wing, a center forward, and a referee? You may be thinking soccer, but we’re talking water polo!
Water polo was added as part of a pilot program for the 2022-2023 season, according to University Interscholastic League (UIL). Our Klein Collins Tigers were ready for action when they rallied up their first team to compete this year.
“I am extremely proud that Klein Collins is the first Klein ISD school to have a water polo team for both girls and boys. As a former water polo player, it’s nice to see the sport take off in Klein and Texas,” said Klein Collins Swim & Water Polo Coach Jim Sharp. “Our team is learning not only the fundamentals but also the rules, plays, and the physical demands of playing water polo. They are progressing very quickly!”
Our student-athletes didn’t need much convincing to join the water polo team. Coach Sharp was a previous water polo player in high school, and to see his students excited was all he needed to push for the sport. These Tigers are dedicated swimmers taking on another sport, hoping to create a path for water polo to expand to incoming students who may be interested.
“Being the first school to establish a water polo team is truly an amazing opportunity.” Klein Collins senior Luke Johnson said. “I enjoy the sport. Once I’m in the water, I’m having a blast with my teammates, and I would like to see more people involved in this sport.”
Klein ISD is proud of these Tigers for stepping up to the challenge and wish them the best during their inaugural season!
