‘Klein Legend’ Butch Theiss Named Distinguished Alum for October

At the October meeting of the Board of Trustees, Klein Family legend Mr. Edwin (Butch) Theiss was honored as the Distinguished Klein ISD Alum. Mr. Theiss was nominated by Board Vice President and fellow Klein High Alum Mr. Rob Ellis.

“We are grateful to Mr. Theiss for sharing his story and being a living example of our deep roots and strong branches in our wonderful Klein ISD school community,” Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown said. “Not only do we honor him as a distinguished alumnus, but we also thank him for serving 17 faithful years as an employee, as well as a member of the Klein ISD Board of Trustees. Butch is a treasured member of our Klein Family.”

The Theiss family has a long history in northwest Harris County. The great-great grandfather of Mr. Theiss arrived in the Matagorda Bay area in 1846 with plans to travel to New Braunfels. However, because no wagons and teams were available, he traveled to the Rosehill area where he settled. Mr. Theiss’s great-grandfather moved into the Klein area in 1854. Theiss was born in a house that still stands near Hassler Elementary School.

Mr. Theiss attended Trinity Lutheran School through the eighth grade when he transferred to Klein High School. During high school, Mr. Theiss was a four-year letterman in basketball. He also ran track and participated in FFA. In 1947, when Klein fielded its first football team, Mr. Theiss, who had graduated in the spring of 1947, returned to his alma mater to play on its first football team and to take courses such as chemistry that he had not taken previously.

After his final semester at Klein High School, Mr. Theiss accepted a job with Southwestern Bell. He remained with the company for 38 years. After that, he followed a second career as an employee of Klein ISD for 17 years. Now, in retirement, Mr. Theiss attends all Klein High football games, baseball games, and basketball games. He also enjoys deer hunting.

“I’m very proud that the football field was named in my honor,” Mr. Theiss said. “I strongly believe in extracurricular activities—not only football, but everything—band, baseball, soccer, I support it all.”

The Theiss family has played an instrumental role in Klein ISD. John Edwin Theiss, the father of Butch Theiss, served on the school board for Rural High School #1 before the Klein ISD was created. His brother Victor served six years on the Klein ISD board. And Theiss served on the board from 1967-1985.

“We have a good school board and an outstanding Superintendent. I’m proud of Dr. McGown and the Board of Trustees—I think they’re doing an excellent job,” Mr. Theiss said.

We are beyond grateful to Mr. Theiss for being a treasured alum of Klein High School and the heartbeat of Klein ISD. Please join us in congratulating Butch Theiss as the October Alum of the Month!
