Klein ISD Sweeps Regional Academic Decathlon Competition, Heads to State

Klein ISD Academic Decathletes out-performed their competitors from various districts at the Regional Competition on Saturday, January 28, 2023, to sweep the competition with Klein High placing first, Klein Forest placing second, Klein Collins placing third, and Klein Cain placing ninth.

Klein High Principal Brandon Baker expressed his excitement for Klein High’s first-place win.

“We are so proud of our Academic Decathlon students and their coaches,” Mr. Baker said. “Their drive and commitment to success are unparalleled, and this group of students truly exhibit what it means to set the Blue and Gold standard of excellence at Klein High.”

In their recent second-place finish, the Klein Forest team overcame a 2022 ranking of sixth place. Klein Forest dedicated numerous hours preparing for the 2023 competition season, earning 52 medals for the year, an all-time high.

With a turnaround season like this, it’s no wonder that proud Principal Lance Alexander had to commend his students and show gratitude to their coaches.

“I’m very proud of our Academic Decathlon team and their efforts in making improvements and huge strides in this rigorous competition,” Mr. Alexander said. “Mr. Chun and Ms. Seo have invested many hours with our students, and the evidence of that investment and service speaks for itself.”

The United States Academic Decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. The 2022-2023 Academic Decathlon theme was The American Revolution and New Nation. The events include student speeches, one on a topic of choice and one on an improvisational topic.

Additionally, competitors write an essay and are interviewed by judges asking questions about students’ past experiences and their goals for the future. Students take challenging exams centered around the theme of the American Revolution in Art, Economics, Literature, Math, Music, Science, and Social Science. In Super Quiz, teams solve questions and problems—in front of a live audience.

Each high school enters a team of nine students: three Honor students, three Scholastic students, and three  Varsity students, with designations for each level based on the students’ academic standing and overall GPA.

Congratulations to all of our #KleinFamily Academic Decathlon medalists and their coaches for this high level of academic excellence!
