Renowned Ballet Dancer Makes Meaningful Moves with Klein Oak Dance

KLEIN, Texas – Ms. Lauren Anderson, an American ballet dancer and former principal dancer with the Houston Ballet, gave Ms. Fayla Curry’s Klein Oak dance class the experience of a lifetime. The renowned dancer personally led aspiring Panther dancers in a hands-on masterclass.

“Lauren Anderson’s class was a really good experience for me. I was nervous going into it, but I ended up really enjoying her class,” Klein Oak senior Bibi Adegbola said. “I’m grateful that she was able to share her proficiency in ballet with our class.”

The Houston Ballet, along with Ms. Anderson, reaches 100,000 students a semester by teaching the masterclass series and the organization’s 19 other programs in the Department of Education and Community Engagement.

This dancer’s legacy is a testament to her successful career. In 1990, Ms. Anderson was the first African-American ballerina to become a principal for a major dance company. The dancer also appeared in many ballets, such as Don Quixote, Cleopatra, and The Nutcracker. She retired from the Houston Ballet in 2006 and retired from dance in 2009.

Ms. Anderson enjoys teaching students and making a difference in the community through master classes. In addition, she enjoys being part of the magic that keeps young dancers returning to the studio again and again.

“I like teaching students and seeing the light bulb come on. I want them to enjoy coming back to the dance studio, even though it takes a lot of practice and a lot of work,” Ms. Anderson said. “I want to help enhance whatever it is the teachers already implanted in the students and be a small part of that success. But, ultimately, I want them to know anything is possible.”

Thank you to Ms. Anderson, Houston Ballet, and Ms. Curry for setting up this opportunity for our wonderful dancing Panthers!
