Klein ISD Police Department Celebrates 40+ Years of Providing ‘First and Finest’ Police Services

KLEIN, Texas – The Klein ISD Police Department is proud to celebrate over 40 years of providing exceptional police services to the Klein ISD community.
The department began operations on September 1, 1982, with a small team of certified peace officers and has since grown to become a robust law enforcement agency that serves the district’s 88 square miles 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Reflecting on the department’s growth, KPD Police Chief Marlon Runnels expressed his pride in the department’s unwavering commitment to excellence.
“We have come a long way since our beginnings in 1982,” Runnels said. “Our success is a testament to our skilled officers’ dedication and professionalism, and we remain committed to providing the first and finest police services to the Klein ISD community.”
Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown also shared her appreciation for the department’s service.
“The safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our priority,” Dr. McGown said. “KPD has been an integral part of our Klein Family and community for over 40 years, and we are grateful for their unwavering commitment to Klein ISD.”
Over the past 40+ years, four Police chiefs have led KPD, including Chief Marlon Runnels, who assumed the role in 2022. Speaking on his role as Police Chief, Chief Runnels shared his passion for working in a school setting and supporting students.
“There’s just something that speaks to me about working in a school setting and being able to support kids,” he said.
KPD has remained committed to innovation and adapting to meet the district’s evolving safety and security needs. The department’s Leadership Academy, launched in 2015 to positively influence the relationship between the school district police force and students, is just one of many examples of the department’s innovation in school-based policing.
In addition to Leadership Academy, the Klein ISD Police Department boasts one of the highest concentrations of ALERRT-trained officers among all police forces in Texas. Our ALERRT-trained officers often train neighboring district and city police forces.
As KPD looks to the future, the department remains committed to providing first-class police services to the Klein ISD community. Their rich history and dedication to excellence continue to inspire trust and confidence in the community they serve.
